The dust jacket is in a plastic sleeve and has wear, tears, soiling and chips. Zack Terrell Mosley (December 12, 1906 - December 21, 1993) was an American comic strip artist best known for the aviation adventures in his long-running The Adventures of Smilin' Jack which ran in more than 300 newspapers from 1933 to 1973. His abilities as a cartoonist showed up at this early age, and some of his work is in the high school annual. His love for airplanes went back to his childhood in Oklahoma. When an Army "Jenny" landed nearby, he began the habit of sketching planes that was to continue throughout his professional life. Comics historian Ron Goulart commented that The Adventures of Smilin' Jack was the most popular aviation adventure strip in the country in the 1930s and 1940s. There was a romance to aviation, and Mr. Mosley got in on that. Mosley, who also designed posters, insignias and program covers for flying events, became a licensed pilot on November 13, 1936. He owned nine airplanes, logging over 3000 hours at the controls, and flew on Civil Air Patrol anti-submarine flights during World War II. In May 1948, Mosley was the first civilian recipient of the Naval Air Reserve certificate of merit, for boosting air-mindedness and civil defense through his strip. This work features an thrilling narrative revolving around Smilin' Jack and a daring girl pilot. This book is a captivating read that transports readers to a world of excitement and exploration. This Authorized edition was based on a famous comic strip. The Adventures of Smilin' Jack is an aviation comic strip that first appeared on October 1, 1933, in the Chicago Tribune and ended on April 1, 1973. After a run of 40 years, it was the longest-running aviation comic strip. The strip was created by 27-year-old cartoonist and aviation enthusiast Zack Mosley, who had previously worked on the Buck Rogers and Skyroads strips. Mosley was a member of organizations that indicate his avid aviation research for his strip: Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Aviation-Space Writers Association, National Cartoonists Society, Silver Wings Society, and the Quiet Birdmen Fraternity for many years. On September 18, 1976, he was inducted into the Civil Air Patrol Auxiliary-USAF Hall of Honor. Smilin' Jack was originally Mack Martin, in On the Wing, but Chicago Tribune editor Joseph Medill Patterson did not like the original title, so on December 31, 1933, the name was changed to Jack Martin, and the strip was retitled The Adventures of Smilin' Jack after its creator, who had been nicknamed "Smilin' Zack" by his colleagues. In later years it was simply known as Smilin' Jack. Authorized Edition [stated]. Presumed first printing thus. Zack Mosley (illustrator).…

Zustand: Fine. No Dust Jacket As Issued. First Edition, First Printing. Thus. Signed first edition, thus of a key 19381939 Smilin' Jack storyline, issued late in Zack Mosley's life and inscribed by the creator. The volume reproduces an important aviation arc introducing several of the strip's enduring secondary characters, making it of interest to collectors of Golden Age newspaper comics, aviation illustration, and signed cartoonist material. Softcover. Illustrated wraps. Approximately 11 inches tall. 104 pages. Black-and-white cartoon strip reproductions throughout. Cartoons reproduced by permission of the Chicago Tribune. Reprints a complete Smilin' Jack episode originally syndicated 19381939. First Edition. Condition: The bindings are tight and square. Text is clean; no writing to interior pages. Covers remain crisp with minimal handling wear. A prior owner's embossed stamp is present at the corner of the cover. Overall very good or better for a signed softcover of this type. First Edition. The Hot Rock Glide reproduces a full aviation adventure sequence from Smilin' Jack at the height of its popularity, when the strip blended pulp-style aerial action with humor and serialized storytelling. This particular arc is notable for introducing several recurring figures, including the grotesque villain Head, the heavyset comic foil Fat Stuff, and the enigmatic Downwind, whose unseen face became a memorable visual device. The reprint format preserves the pacing and panel rhythm of the original newspaper run, allowing modern readers to experience the strip as it unfolded for contemporary audiences on the eve of World War II. Mosley's clear line, mechanical accuracy, and instinctive understanding of flight culture remain evident throughout. Contextual and historical significance: Zack Mosley's Smilin' Jack ran in more than 300 newspapers from 1933 to 1973, making it one of the longest-running aviation comic strips of the twentieth century. Appearing during the golden age of barnstorming and early commercial aviation, the strip helped popularize flying for a mass readership and influenced later aviation comics and illustration styles. This 1979 Gulfstream Printing edition represents a late-career retrospective moment, produced when interest in classic newspaper strips was resurging among collectors. Signed copies are uncommon, particularly with dated inscriptions, and appeal primarily to comic-strip historians, aviation art collectors, and institutional libraries documenting American popular culture. Subjects: Aviation comics, Golden Age newspaper strips, Zack Mosley, Smilin' Jack, American cartoonists, 1930s aviation culture, syndicated comics, Comic art, aviation history, American popular culture, newspaper strip reprints.…
