Located at Noborioji, Nara City). No sightseeing visit to Nara would be completed without some time spent in the precincts of the Kohuku-ji, one of the most ancient Buddhist temples in Japan with its beautiful five-storied pagoda casting its reflection in the Sarusawa pond. HISTORY: The Kohuku-ji, located at the entrance to Nara Park and almost within a stone's throw of the Nara Hotel has a history of nearly thirteen hundred years. The temple was founded in 669 A. D. by the wife of Hujiwara Kamatari, one of the founders of the great family of Hujiwara which was destined to play such an important role in the history of Japan from the eighth to the twelfth century. The original temple was established in Yamashina Suehara (now Kioto), as the private place of worship of Hujiwara Kamatari but a few years later was moved to a place named Umayasaka in Nara prefecture and when the Imperial Court was transferred to Heijokyo in the year 710, the Umayasaka temple was moved again to its present site in Nara and re-named Kohuku-ji (although it was sometimes referred to as Kasuga-ji).
