The Vicar of Wakefield was one of the most popular and widely read novels upon its publication. It concerns the fall and rise of the Primrose family, who are presided over by the benevolent narrator, the Vicar. Written by Oliver Goldsmith, an Irish novelist who is best known for this novel, though also for his pastoral poem 'The Deserted Village', and the plays 'The Good-Natur'd Man' and 'She Stoops to Conquer'. This edition (with the exception of the title page) is a verbatim and facsimile reprint of that issued in 1843, being the first containing Mulready's illustrations. The title page in this volume was specially designed for this edition by J. Walter West. In a half morocco binding.
