He is best remembered for sponsoring Henry Morton Stanley's trip to Africa to find David Livingston, financing the whole endeavor for exclusive dispatches from the Congo. As a sportsman Bennett is credited with organizing the first tennis match in the United States. As a businessman he partnered with Jay Gould and co-founded the Commercial Cable Company.
