The world's energy consumption is estimated to be 3.36 x 1020 J per annum and is projected to increase to up to 6.3 x 1020 J in the year 2050. Biodiesel derived from oil crops is a potential renewable and carbon neutral alternative to petroleum fuels. Using an alternative fuel is one of the options that could possibly solve these environmental problems. Different biofuels were already developed and used in many parts of the world and the most popular is the biodiesel which is an alternative to petroleum diesel. Extensive research and demonstration projects have shown that biodiesel can be used pure or in blends with conventional diesel fuel in unmodified diesel engines. Interest in biodiesel has been expanding recently due to government incentives and high petroleum prices. Biodiesel occupies a prominent position among the alternatives to conventional petrodiesel fuel owing to various technical and economic factors. It is obtained by reacting the parent vegetable oil or fat with an alcohol (Transesterification) in the presence of a catalyst to give the corresponding monoalkyl esters which are defined as biodiesel. Because of the nature of the starting material the production process and subsequent handling various factors can influence biodiesel fuel quality. Biodiesel steadily gaining interest and significance in light of recent developments such as the upsurge in petroleum prices and the implementation of financial incentives for its use. With the increasing interest and use the assurance of fuel properties and quality has become of paramount interest to the successful commercialization and market acceptance of biodiesel. Our Honorable President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and many other scientists mentioned the necessary of biofuels for our country. The River Bank Filtration (RBF) is one of the solution that has come up with a unique and cost effective technology. It is a process wherein the surface water from rivers, channels and lakes is induced by pumping from nearby production wells to flow through the natural aquifer sediments. This process further initiates several positive changes in the quality of water before finally mixing with the local groundwater. The water obtained from this process can directly be used for drinking purpose and it rarely required any further treatment. In this, context the Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology, (UCOST) Dehradun, National Institute of Hydrology, (NIH) Roorkee, Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan, (UJS) Dehradun, Indian Institute of Technology, (IIT) Roorkee, initiated a collaborative project "River Bank Filtration for Quality Drinking Water", which was funded by the Department of Science and Technology (Government of India), under the technical expertise of the HTW University of Dresden, Germany. This book is an attempt to compile and prepare a guideline of scientific and applied value to help engineers, scientists and policy makers for implementing RBF. Here all necessary aspects such as background, planning scheme, design operations and maintenance, water quality parameters, risk assessment, post-treatment, numerical flow, awareness strategies and sustainability of RBF along with worldwide case studies are discussed in detail.

Most of the rural poor depend on rain-fed agriculture and fragile forests for their livelihoods. Agricultural risk is associated with negative outcomes that stem from imperfectly predictable climatic and price variables. Weather and climate are major risks and uncertainty factors impacting agriculture production. Market risk is due accessibility of inputs, uncertainty of prices in buying inputs, selling farm output, dairy and livestock products etc. Risk management is very critical to the success of agriculture, and yet there is a lack of tools used to manage risk as well as a lack of understanding of the tools themselves. Though, risk is an integral part of agriculture and farmers make risky decisions every day and confront different types of risk, changes in the risk environment and available tools to manage the risk make it a compelling reason to engage in risk management education.
