One of the greatest experimentalists in the history of science, New Zealand-born British physicist Ernest Rutherford came to be known as the father of nuclear physics and was awarded the 1908 Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for his investigations into the disintegration of the elements, and the chemistry of radioactive substances", for which he was the first Canadian and Oceanian Nobel laureate. Rutherford traveled in 1914 with a selection of the most renowned British scientists aboard the SS Euripides to Australia for the annual meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science.
