The Anglo-Boar War of 1899-1902 was one of the most important conflicts of the Victorian era and, siginificantly, not only spanned the end of Queen Victoria's long reign and the beginning of that of King Edward VII, but also the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. After General Sir Redvers Buller's 'Black Week' defeats in December 1899, Lord Roberts was sent to South Africa to take over as Commander-in-Chief. Thousands of documents relating to Robert's direction of the Anglo-Boar War survive. The documents selected for this volume cover all aspects of his conduct of the war, including strategic planning, tactical intentions, logistical problems, and his views of senior officers. In this publication, the Army Records Society's Anglo-Boar Centennial Commemoration Volume, 111 mostly hitherto unpublished letters written by or to Roberts, and a number of relevant documents, have been reproduced in full. When Lord Roberts was sent to South Africa at the end of 1899 to take over as Commander-in-Chief of the British forces in the region, it was decided that Lord Kitchener had to go along as his Chief of Staff. These two renowned British soldiers had radically different personalities, and Kitchener - fresh from his successes in the Sudan - was reputed to be 'difficult', but they did not clash; as a matter of fact their abilities complemented each other to a remarkable degree. At midnight on 28-29 November 1900 Roberts handed over the command in South Africa to Kitchener, convinced that only some 'police work' still remained to be done. However, within a fortnight, the war escalated geographically as well as in intensity, and the new Commander-in-Chief had to ask for more troops. Oktober 1981 in Recklinghausen) ist ein ehemaliger deutscher Florettfechter, Weltmeister und Olympiamedaillengewinner bei den Olympischen Spielen 2012 in London. Des Weiteren ist er mehrfacher Weltcupsieger im Einzel und mit der Mannschaft sowie vielfacher deutscher Meister im Einzel und mit der Mannschaft. Er gehörte zum A-Kader der Florettfechter[1] und kämpft für den Olympischen Fechtclub Bonn (OFC Bonn). Er war Sportsoldat (Dienstgrad Oberfeldwebel) in der Sportfördergruppe der Bundeswehr in Köln[2]. Karriere Von 1998 bis 2001 gelangen ihm viele Erfolge im Juniorenbereich. So war er unter anderem viermal Juniorenweltmeister, Gesamtweltcupsieger der Junioren 2001, Juniorsportler des Jahres 2001 und gewann mehrere Medaillen bei Junioreneuropameisterschaften. 2000 und 2001 gewann er noch im Juniorenalter die deutsche Meisterschaft der Aktiven im Florett-Einzel. Bei den Weltmeisterschaften in Lissabon gewann er Silber im Einzel und Gold mit der Mannschaft. 2002 wurde er dann auch zum DFB-Fechter des Jahres gewählt. Ein Jahr später bei den Weltmeisterschaften in Havanna gewann er nochmals Bronze mit der Mannschaft. Die Olympischen Spiele 2004 beendete er im Einzel auf Platz 24 und im Team auf Platz sechs. Er startete bis 2008 für den Fecht-Club Tauberbischofsheim, ab Juni 2008 dann für den Olympischen Fechtclub Bonn.[3] Danach wurde es etwas ruhig um ihn, bis er bei den Fechteuropameisterschaften 2009 in Plowdiw im Einzel die Bronzemedaille holte. 2011 gewann Weßels bei den Weltmeisterschaften in Catania Bronze mit der Mannschaft.
