Like Tim Sloan, the protagonist of his Appalachian Series of novels (Family Values, Foreclosure Time, A Small Death), James E. [Edwin] Crouch is an outsider living in Appalachia.
He lives in retirement on the side of Powell Mountain in Scott County, Virginia with his wife, Margaret, a neurotic cat (AKA Gandalf) and Luna the Wonder Dog (AKA She Who Must be Obeyed).
In a previous existence he enjoyed the academic life, teaching New Testament in, among other places, Phillips University (Enid, Oklahoma) and Kwansei Gakuin University (Nishinomiya, Japan).
His earliest non-fiction publication was his Tübingen dissertation, THE ORIGIN AND INTENTION OF THE COLOSSIAN HAUSTAFEL (Göttingen, 1972). His latest study was “Augustine and Gadamer: An Essay on Wirkungsgeschichte,” ENCOUNTER 68/4 (2007) 1-14.
In recent years he has translated a number of theological works including Ulrich Luz’s three volume DAS EVANGELIUM NACH MATTHÄUS (Fortress Press, 2001, 2005, 2007) and the final volume of François Bovon’s L’ÉVANGILE SELON SAINT LUC (Fortress Press, 2012) before turning to his love of fiction.
He is a D. Theol, Eberhard Karls Universität, Tübingen.
