Huntington Library and Art Gallery, mit Genehmigung. / Facsimile reproduction from the unique copy in the Henry E. Huntington Library and Art Gallery, by permission. / Aus der Einleitung / From the introduction: "Blenerhasset's Reuelation is, to all intents and purposes, a newly discovered document in the history of Elizabethan poetry, since the text has never before been accessible to students. It belongs to the pastoral-mythological branch of that great body of literature celebrating Queen Elizabeth which has been so ably reviewed by Professor Elkin C. Wilson in England's Eliza (Cam- bridge, Mass., 1939). But its date (1582) entitles it to a place also in studies of the English pastoral, of Spenser's early influence, and of metrical experimentation in English verse. It contains the first imitation of the Shepheardes Calender to appear in print, and the first pattern poems to be printed in English. It reflects the form and content of courtly poetry at the time when Spenser, Sidney, and Lyly had just ushered in a new literary era, and just before Lyly and Peele began to write the series of pastoral-mythological court comedies which did so much to give literary distinction to courtly entertainment. The Reuelation contains some interesting metrical experiments and some graceful lyrics; but it owes its importance less to any absolute literary merit than to the new light which it throws on its author and on the state of English poetry in 1582. -- The Poet -- Thomas Blenerhasset has been known as a poet only by his Seconde Part of the Mirrour for Magistrates (1578), a work in which he appears as a belated imitator of a dying mediaeval literary form. But in the Reuelation he demonstrates his active participation in the new school of experimental versification which focused attention on poetic technique and so laid the foundations For the great age which was just beginning to dawn." In den WarenkorbFirst edition. First edition. Title-page with woodcut architectural border (McKerrow 161), woodcut initials. [vi], 66 ff. Collation: *^4 **^2 A-Q^4 R^2. 12mo. The first and only separate edition of the "Seconde Part" of this important Tudor sourcebook, being a continuation of John Higgins' "First Parte," published first in 1574, itself a prequel to William Baldwin's "Last Part," first published in 1559. Thus this edition fills the gap chronologically between the Higgins first part (which ends with the birth of Christ) and Baldwin's last part (which begins in the 14th century), and includes the stories of Guidericus, Carassus, Helena, Vortiger, Uther Pendragon, and others. The Higgins and Baldwin parts were published by Thomas Marshe, who was not involved in this printing. The Pforzheimer catalogue notes that this is the only work to bear Richard Webster's name in the imprint: "In this instance his role was that of publisher for the volume was printed by Dawson, possibly with the aid of his partner, Thomas Gardiner. There is reason, therefore, to doubt that Webster was a printer." Although not particularly rare in institutional holdings, this Seconde Part has appeared infrequently on the market - the last copy at auction was the Robert Pirie copy, lacking a signature, which sold for $4,750. ESTC S104601; Grolier, Langland to Wither 177; Pforzheimer 736. Provenance: Robert Truelove (contemporary inscription on verso of ff.
