Kur'an ayetlerinin yanisira cahiliye dönemi Arap siirini de kullanarak, Hz. Muhammed'in içine dogdugu ve çagrisini vazettigi toplumu karakterize eden zihniyeti ve degerleri analiz etmistir. O, hem Kur'anî dünya görüsünün cahiliye zihniyetinden nasil kesin bir sekilde koptugunu, hem de ayni zamanda müsrik Araplar'in bakis açisindan kimi unsurlari nasil kendi bünyesine uygun hale sokarak içine aldigini göstermistir. Izutsu'nun bu çalismasinin bir diger önemli özelligi, üzerinde çalistigi dinî ve ahlakî kavramlarin her birinin anlam alanini belirleyen semantik analiz yöntemini kullanmasidir. Kur'an metnindeki her bir kavramin etrafi, onun alanini belirleyen ve yapisini olusturan diger kavramlarla çevrilidir. Ona göre, bir terimin anlamini belirleyen sey, onun etrafini çevreleyen ve ona yakin duran sözcüklerle iliskisidir. Aslinda, bu yöntem, Kur'an'in kendisini tefsir etmesini de mümkün kilar. Eserde, ahlâkî dil konusundaki soyut bir teorinin yerini, tüm analitik çalismalarin temelinde yatan linguistik yahut seman-tik dünya görüsü ile ilgili daha esasli bir teori almis ve analize yön veren metodolojik ilkeler ortaya konulmustur. Kur'an'da Dini ve Ahlaki Kavramlar üç bölümden olusmak-tadir: ilk bölümde semantik analizin metodolojik ilkeleri izah edilmis; ikinci bölümde, Islam öncesine ait kabileci ahlâk kurallari ile Kur'anî ahlâk prensipleri arasindaki olumlu yahut olumsuz iliski izah edilmis; son olarak da ilk bölümde açiklanan metodolojik ilkelerin tutarli bir uygulamasini yapmak suretiyle Kur'an'daki belli basli dinî-ahlâkî kavramlarin bir analizi yapilmistir.
