One of the basic policies of the Government of India is to give a special priority to promote and protect the distinctive identity of the tribal people. The idea of autonomy and self government are the main themes under this policy. With this basic objective the Government of India through the constitution of the country provides district level autonomy for tribal people. This is known as the VI Schedule of the Constitution. However most of the common people particularly of Manipur are not able to have a detailed information about the nature of the working of the district council in the tribal area. So sometime a sense of confusion was developed in their attempt to understand the working system. This monograph is the first of its kind of study on the functioning of district council. In this work author analysed very critically about the nature of the functioning of the system of the autonomy in the district council of tribal inhabited area. Indeed it is a good exercise to bring awareness among the common people in general of the character of autonomy at district level. Hardcover. Zustand: New. The North East Region (NER) of India is in turmoil as protests of different kinds often flared up in this region. Manipur, often referred to as 'little paradise on earth' has ceased to be a Shangri-La. The high prevalence of protests and social movements in contemporary Northeast India is the reflection of socio-political instability, emerging voices of dissents and the state's apathy to the rising aspirations of the people. Movements in the midst of the state's authoritarian response to people's sentiments often incite contentious collective episodes triggering many violent 'cycles ofprotests' which had shown enormous repercussions on various spheres of public life, sometimes ensuing near-complete breakdown of social order. In this backdrop, the present book addresses the relationship between the state, civil society and social movements in Northeast India thereby sheds light on the working of the broader socio-political structures in this region. The present volume presents a comprehensive understanding of protests and movements in Northeast India in general and Manipur in particular. This book presents an academic discourse decoding the complex matrix of relationships between state, civil society and social movements in Northeast India. Introductory chapter highlights the main arguments put forwarded in the subsequent ten chapters contributed by scholars from different backgrounds. The book looks for theoretical insights coupled with empirical evidences from the dynamics of existing relationship between the state, civil society and social movements in the northeast and comes up with illuminating case studies and examples. The book will be useful for policy planners, social activists, academics, students, and researchers in the field of political science, history, sociology, women studies and for general readers interested in Northeast India.
