Trade paperback. Zustand: Good. 159, [1] pages. Illustrations. Maps. Index. Decorative front cover. Cover has some wear and soiling. Name of previous owner written in ink on title page. Prepared under the supervision of Frederic M. Rea. During WWII, Fred served first with the Office of Naval Intelligence and ultimately found himself in far off places on the staff of Admiral Guenther, who was under the command of Admiral Nimitz. Fred received his honorable discharge in 1946. He would soon return to the Pacific and Asia to become an influential force for the good will and economic promise of international tourism. Fred began his publishing career working with Sunset Magazine in 1949, becoming the Travel Editor in 1951. In 1954, he founded Western Business Publications, specializing in industry publications including Pacific Travel News, Pacific Hotel Directory and Pacific Commerce. He was instrumental in expanding interest in diverse industries and the rich potential of Pacific Rim tourism. Fred also collaborated on the publication of colorful travel books for Sunset Magazine and Book Publishing Company. As VP of Publications for the Pacific Area Travel Association (PATA), he helped transform America's perception of the South Pacific as a theater of war to a compelling tourist destination. Mary Benton Smith taught journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno, during World War II and was later head of the Nevada Associated Press Bureau. This was written at a time of significant change and turmoil in Southeast Asia. The section on South Viet Nam was described as "Only for those who have to go there." This covers the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Burma, Cambodia, Laos, and South Vietnam. Among the topics covered are Manila, Pagsanjan Falls, Zamboanga, Djakarta, Bali, Sumatra, Penang, Malacca, Borneo, Johore, Bangkok, Klongs, Kanorn Pathom, Chiangmai, Mandalay, Rangoon, Inya Lake, Angkor War, Phnom Penh, Tonle Sap, Mekong, Vientiane, and Luang Prabrang. First U.S. Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated]. Shirley Fockler (cover photograph) (illustrator).
