Alan Sonfist is among the first generation of 1960s artists who began to explore the natural environment as both the site of, and the material for, creative practice. Sonfist is perhaps best known for his project Time Landscape, a handcrafted New York City park located at the corner of Houston Street and La Guardia Place in Greenwich Village. In Time Landscape, Sonfist researched, cultivated, and planted a park of indigenous foliage that grew on Manhattan island prior to European settlement. The park was developed in 1965, planted in 1978, and continues in perpetuity. Time Landscape s evolving, open-ended interaction with New York s bustling urbanism epitomizes the artist s attention to the evolving and contingent dynamics motivating our understanding of the natural world. Unlike many of the most well known artists associated with the Land Art movement Robert Smithson, Michael Heizer, and Walter De Maria Sonfist s work is distinguished by its sustained and multifaceted investigation of humanity s interaction with nature.

Handwritten letter by Alan Sonfist, sent to Stephen Prokopoff, then Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, in which Sonfist proposes his participation in a forthcoming show at the museum: ?Dear Steve, Happy New Year! I just spoke to a friend who said your assistant curator was looking for me to discuss my work to… be in an exhibition about personal art ?Autobiography? at your museum. It sounds like a good show for me to be in since all my art deals with personal experiences of my past. I will be having a one-man exhibition at the Johnson Museum in Ithaca N.Y. which will deal with my early childhood experiences in which I did photographs-drawings of natural areas in the Bronx Park in relationship to contemporary feelings I have about nature. If you are interested in having the entire exhibition at your museum it can be arranged. Best wishes, Alan? Along with the letter Sonfist has sent a 5-page typed ?Autiobiography? and three original black-and-white photographs of his work (Aging scale change, Abandoned animal hole & Running dead animal), each with printed descriptions taped to versos. A copy of the catalogue for Sonfist?s exhibition at the Johnson Museum of Art (Cornell University - March-May, 1975), which he mentioned in his letter, is also included. All three of the photographs are reproduced in the catalogue. In original mailed manila envelope, hand-addressed by Sonfist, and with his return address.
