Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. An excellent copy of this philosophical study. A volume in the SUNY Series in Contemporary Continental Philosophy. Binding is solid and sturdy. Interior is crisp, clean, and free of marks. Interior of the back cover has a small square where the endpaper is to…rn, likely a production error. This issue has no structural impact on the book. Dust jacket has some light overall scuffing. Bottom corners have been bumped, as has the bottom of the spine. Top and bottom edges of the spine have some light wear. DJ is now wrapped in brodart for protection. A great overall copy of this text.

Through a lively text and abundant illustrations - most of them in full colour - Classic Savannah celebrates a city that has taken many forms and played many roles over its two-and-a-half-century history: a tiny settlement on Yamacraw Bluff, a colonial capital, a thriving cotton port, a survivor of wars, and, perhaps most notably, a modern preservation success story." ; William Robert Mitchell, Jr. was the son of William Robert Mitchell, former Comptroller General of Georgia and Georgia State Insurance Commissioner. He graduated in 1956 from The Westminster Schools, and received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1999. He attended Duke University for one year before transferring to Emory University where he graduated in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History; Bill was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. Bill worked for the Georgia Historical Commission as the Staff Historian between 1964 and 1973, working for Mary Gregory Jewett; he took an educational leave of absence from 1967 to 1969 to attend the University of Delaware, earning a Master's degree in American Studies, and furthering his education at the Winterthur Museum, in Architectural History and American Decorative Arts. His Master's degree thesis was entitled, "The Philadelphia T Square Club, 1883-1938". He then returned to Georgia as the Director of the Georgia Historic Sites Survey, under the aegis of the Director of the Georgia Historical Commission, where he established and managed the National Register of Historic Places program in Georgia. During this time, he also worked on the Tullie Smith Restoration Project, where he was the Director of Research and member of the restoration committee for the Atlanta Junior League and the Atlanta Historical Society. This was his most important private consultation in restoration. In 1974 he went on to become the Executive Director at Historic Augusta, Inc. An architectural and cultural historian, historic preservationist, lecturer, and award-winning author of 19 books, he was a founding trustee of The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation in 1973 and author of its first major book, J. Neel Reid, Architect, of Hentz, Reid, & Adler, published in 1997. In 1998 he was the founding president of Southern Architecture Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit educational corporation that has published his The Architecture of James Means (2001) and a reprint of the rare 1931 Southern Architecture Illustrated (2002), for which he wrote a new preface. He also founded the History Business, LLC, to facilitate the writing of additional books on architectural history. His monographs on Southern architects include Lewis Edmund Crook, Jr., Architect (1984), The Architecture of William Frank McCall, Jr. (1985), The Residential Architecture of Henry Sprott Long (1991), A Continuing Tradition: William Frank McCall, Jr., FAIA, 1914-1991 (1992), Edward Vason Jones, Architect, Connoisseur, and Collector, 1909-1980 (1995), and Summerour, Architecture of Permanence, Scale and Proportion (2006). In addition, Bill was the author of Landmarks, The Architecture of Thomasville and Thomas County, Georgia (1980), Landmark Homes of Georgia, 1733-1983 (1982), Classic Savannah (1987), From Plantation to Peachtree, "The Victorian Legacy" (1987), Gardens of Georgia (1989), Classic Atlanta (1991), Classic New Orleans (1993), and An Anniversary Celebration of Seventy Homes (1999). ; Van Jones Martin is a prominent American architectural and interior photographer known for documenting historic Southern homes and landscapes, particularly in Georgia ; FINE/FINE. That tradition is vividly portrayed in Gardens of Georgia, commissioned by the Garden Club of Georgia, Inc., to commemorate its sixtieth anniversary and to celebrate the heritage and beauty of Georgia's gardens. As noted by Georgia founder James Oglethorpe in 1732, Georgia has a happy climate. From the broad-shouldered mountains of the Blue Ridge, through the red clay of the rolling piedmont, across the sprawling piney coastal plain, and on to the subtropical islands on the Atlantic, Georgia is blessed with four regions of gardening opportunities, distinctly defined by differences in elevation, climate, soil, and natural vegetation.Writer William Mitchell and photographer Richard Moore have portrayed the wonders of gardens historic and contemporary, public and private, and urban, suburban, and rural from each of these regions. Whether illustrating overall gardenscapes or capturing intimate vignettes and individual blossoms, Richard Moore's photographs have a depth of color and clarity of detail that immerse the reader into a world of delightful splendor. The text by Willaim Mitchell not only describes the settings as they are today, but also spins a rich background of history in the context of the botanical Eden observed by early explorers. The richest legacy of each generation is to preserve and protect an always vulnerable natural environment and help nature bring forth its green and glowing cycles of rebirth. Gardens of Georgia celebrates that legacy, sharing the ongoing dream of paradise--a new Eden--whether it is in a grand formal garden from an earlier era or a small plot of perennials in a Georgia yard. ; Contents: Savannah and the Coast --- Coastal Georgia -- The Piedmont plateau -- South Georgia -- Atlanta and North Georgia -- Index of Gardens -- Sources for quoted material -- Bibliography ; FINE/FINE. Softcover. Zustand: gut. Auflage: 1 (Oktober 2006). Mitchell, Jr. -- Edward Vason Jones often joked that, in an age of modernism, he suffered from the rare disease of neoclassicist-itis. In this volume William R. Mitchell, Jr., comprehensively details Jones's life and work, portraying him as one who fulfilled the promise of Georgia's neoclassical tradition to achieve a national reputation as a scholarly architect, connoisseur, and collector. Given natural talent and uncompromising passion, Jones educated himself to a level of classical expertise rarely seen in twentieth-century America. More than illustrations depict the full range of Jones's work, from a well house in rural Georgia to the White House in Washington. -- Without formal training in the field of architecture, Edward Vason Jones began his career in with the design and construction of Gillionville Plantation near his hometown of Albany, Georgia. Architect Hal Hentz, of the prestigious Atlanta firm of Hentz, Adler &. Shutze, was impressed with Jones's work at Gillionville and subsequently hired him as draftsman and superintendent of construction. After a wartime sojourn designing ships for the United States Navy in the classic seaport of Savannah, Jones returned his young family and practice to Albany in, where he worked until his death in, establishing his place among the Ecole des Beaux-Arts-influenced designers in Georgia of the early to mid-twentieth century - Neel Reid, Philip Shutze, James Means, Lewis Crook, Hal Hentz, and Rudolph Adler. -- Building on a significant portfolio of works throughout the South, Jones was selected as consulting architect for the Diplomatic Reception Rooms at the United States Department of State and, later, for the White House. His appointments in Washington spanned the presidencies of Johnson, Nixon, Ford, and Carter and elevated him to national stature as one of America's preeminent designers working in the classical tradition. -- Edward Vason Jones was a critic and a historian of architecture and the decorative arts. A collector from his student days, he became an eminent connoisseur and collector of American Neoclassical furniture, especially of his favorite Federal period.
