Vintage flyer for a New Year's Eve event at avant-garde New York performance venue Renaissance House on December 31, 1962. A unique confluence of critical moments for performers and arts organizations alike. Only a month earlier, on November 23, 1962, the Cecil Taylor Unit recorded their landmark 1963 live album "Nefertiti, the Beautiful One Has Come" at the Café Montmartre in Copenhagen. Archie Shepp and Bill Dixon released their acclaimed debut album, "Archie Shepp-Bill Dixon Quartet," two months earlier, in October, 1962. The Living Theatre had just premiered their production of Bertold Brecht's 1926 play "Man Is Man," followed by a groundbreaking world tour. Finally, a year prior, the newly launched literary journal The Provincetown Review had published a chapter from Hubert Selby Jr.'s 1964 novel "Last Exit to Brooklyn," leading to the arrest of editor Bill Ward and a subsequent landmark 1961 obscenity trial. 14 x 8.5 inches. Signed cleanly by Shepp in blue ball-point pen on a light area of the front cover, incorporating the Swahili word for freedom: "Uhuru! Archie Shepp, 23/2/00". An interesting and approachable teaming of Shepp, who also features on piano, with Philly Joe Jones, remembered, of course, for his association with Miles's first great quintet, and a trio of the finest free players in Anthony Braxton (alto and soprano, making an early appearance on record), Leroy Jenkins (violin), and Earl Freeman (bass); Julio Finn (harmonica) and Chicago Beau (vocals, soprano and harmonica) also supplied the liner notes. It's not an all-out free jazz shriekfest and shows a clear indebtedness to Mingus. 12-inch vinyl LP (America 30 AM 6102), new plain paper sleeve (original sleeve also present), original album cover. Five vintage oversize photographs of jazz saxophonist Archie Shepp, shot by Italian photographer Giuseppe Pino, with his stamp on the verso of each. Taken during Shepp's time in Montreux, Switzerland, for the 1975 Montreux Jazz Festival, held from July 18-20, 1975. Includes two photographs of Shepp on a train, one photograph of Shepp at the train station, and two showing Shepp seated and playing the saxophone. Stamp of photographer Giuseppe Pino on the versos. Shepp's performance on the first day of the festival was recorded for the live album "Montreux One," released on Arista Freedom in 1976. 9.5 x 12 inches, with wide margins.
