Localisée sur le flanc nord-ouest d?une butte morainique, en bordure d?une terrasse naturelle en contrebas de la Porte de l?Est, elle domine la ville antique. Le cimetière n?a pas été fouillé dans son intégralité, puisque seule une surface d?environ 250 m2 a été explorée et que son extension totale est évaluée à au moins 1200 m2. L?espace funéraire a été utilisé durant une courte période, entre 30/40 et 70/80 ap. J.-C. Ce cimetière est ainsi le plus ancien connu à ce jour à Avenches. Sa courte durée d?utilisation s?explique par des raisons d?ordre urbanistique. Le changement de statut de la ville, qui a accédé en 71/72 au rang de colonie, a engendré un remaniement important qui s?est notamment traduit par une extension de la superficie du territoire urbain et par l?édification du mur d?enceinte. Dès lors situé intra muros, le cimetière d?À la Montagne a été abandonné. Le site a livré 150 structures, parmi lesquelles 127 correspondent à des vestiges sépulcraux ou liés à des pratiques funéraires: on recense 14 inhumations d?adultes et 20 inhumations.
