Eve Smith

Eve Smith writes speculative fiction, mainly about the things that scare her.

In this world of questionable facts and news, she believes storytelling can be a powerful way to engage people in real life issues.

Longlisted for the Guardian's Not the Booker Prize and described by British bookshop chain Waterstones as: "an exciting new voice in crime fiction", Eve's debut novel The Waiting Rooms, set during an antibiotic crisis, was shortlisted for the Bridport Prize First Novel Award and selected as a Guardian book of the month.

Her second thriller, Off Target, imagines a world where genetic engineering of children has become the norm. It was a Times book of the month who described it as "an astute, well-researched and convincing novel of ideas".

Her latest thriller, ONE, longlisted for Best Novel in the British Science Fiction Association Awards was described as "pleasingly terrifying" by New Scientist.

It is set in a one-child policy Britain that has been ravaged by the climate crisis.

Eve’s previous job as COO of an environmental charity took her to research projects across Asia, Africa and the Americas, and she has an ongoing passion for wild creatures, wild science and far-flung places.
