152pp, two volumes in one, text in traditional Chinese characters, 20.3 x 14cm, paperback. Contents browned, endpapers, edges and wrappers foxed, edges of first leaves creased, spine faded, a sound copy. The History of the Ming Palace was written by Liu Ruoyu, a eunuch who wrote insider accounts of late Ming court officialdom, ceremonies and customs, as well as of his personal experiences, struggles for favour, scandals, corruption, and the tyranny of the powerful eunuch Wei Zhongxian. This work by Liu Ruoqi is a rare historical source by a eunuch, originally written anonymously. Leisure Notes from the Golden Turtle was written by Gao Shiqi, a Qing Dynasty scholar official, and focused on Qing-era palace daily life, architecture, rituals, history and personal observations. It was written near Zhongnanhai?s Golden Turtle Isle, hence the title. Later publishers brought the two books together into a single volume because of their complementary themes.
