Originally from the outer island of Kauai in Hawaii, I had an earlier career as a professional musician, including a decade singing opera in Austria and Germany. Before and after that I worked in Manhattan, then moved to San Francisco to study creative writing along with Amy Tan. Now back home in the islands, in 2013 I received a Ka Palapala "excellence" award from the Hawai'i Publishers Association for my novel "Aloha, Mozart," and was a guest speaker at the University of Hawaii/Maui. For recreation I work on native forest restoration and belong to a school of cultural practitioners.
