Deborah E. Thomas inspires children of all ages to reach their potential by creating stories that kindle the imagination and teach character. Trained as a teacher, Deborah has a unique ability to communicate intangible concepts in a simple, unforgettable fashion. Her award winning children’s story, The Bramble Thicket, delights readers of all ages and has been called, “The Fairy Tale of this Century.”
Deb was born in Maryland, where her father was stationed after WWII. He is a Pearl Harbor Survivor. Her father and mother continued to live in Maryland after he retired from the Navy. He taught her to know God in a personal way and to live her Faith.
As a child, Deborah’s family members each taught her special things by allowing her to help them. Her grandfather was an inventor and creative thinker, and at the age of three, Deborah began helping him on his projects. At age four, he taught her to use calipers to measure the thickness of her own hair. . . this made learning to measure with a ruler easy! He also taught her his theories of hydrodynamics in the water cycle of the earth, and how to listen and diagnose engine problems. She learned reading, sewing, cooking, knitting, and cake decorating from her mom. Gardening, pie making, and crocheting, from her grandma. Exploring and identifying trees was taught by her uncle. Every family member taught in a style of companionship, respect for each other and for the child that watched them.
Her parents opened their home to U.S. servicemen as a place to call “home away from home.” Deborah grew up with many “Big Brothers” in addition to her two sisters and younger brother. She had the incredible opportunity to meet people from around the world. Missionaries, pastors, servicemen and their families all became part of her life.
She is married to James Thomas, LCDR, USN Retired. They have been married more than forty years. As a stay-at-home mom, mother of two, and former home schooler, Deb hopes her stories encourage others.
Her other interests include quilting, painting watercolors, and designing original embroidery. Deborah has been awarded over two-dozen United States Copyrights for original soft toy products and pattern designs. While visiting South Dakota, she solved an archeological mystery by demonstrating how unusual marks on pottery fragments were made and why the marks were necessary.
New frontiers beckon Deborah as she launches The Bramble Thicket as an e-Book, explores the possibilities of an Audio Book, and continues to write more stories in the Bramble Thicket series.
Deborah and enjoys traveling, meeting people and visiting with her four young grandchildren. Her favorite way to sign a letter or note is “Look for Joy.”
