Bauer was a highly respected physicist in Paris in the 1930s, remembered for his work with Fritz London on the quantum theory of measurement; as a specialist in magnetism in Strasbourg he had made a splash by jumping in at the last minute for Paul Langevin at a 1939 conference. The book is inscribed to a physicist who worked with Bauer in Paris in the late 1930s. With Louis Rapkine, Bauer helped organize "Le comité français pour l'accueil et l'organisation du travail des savants étrangers" to rescue refugee scholars. According to Doris Zallen "The actual number of people helped by this committee is not clear (estimates vary between fifteen and thirty)." -- Science moves quickly and while Bauer recalled the inadequacy of teaching at the Sorbonne around 1900, the translation of his French work of the 1930s into English in the 1960s was also met with the unfortunate cry: "the methods and outlook belong to another generation" (Reese T. Prosser, MIT-Lincoln Laboratory).
