Born in Greece in the fourth century BCE, this concept of the human being disappeared at the end of Late Antiquity, before reappearing in the Abbasid Near East. It was M…uslim rationalist theologians who revived it in their theodicy of a just God who can only be just by recognizing the agency of human beings in their voluntary acts. Later, Arabic-speaking philosophers gave it a space of its own under the name of 'human sciences, ' in the 9th century. But a traditional theology got the better of it. Its reappearance had to wait for the European Renaissance, while retaining its Arab origins.

L'Europe latine n'a guère su de Rhazès, d'Avicenne ou d'Averroès, que des élucubrations qui avaient été élaborées sur leur compte comme de les faire vivre tous ensemble en Espagne musulmane et de faire d'Averroès l'empoisonneur d'Avicenne pour cause de jalousie. Cela marque la différence fondamentale entre le mouvement de traduc…tion gréco-arabe et son corollaire arabo-latin. Tandis que le premier s'est soucié de traduire, à partir de la littérature savante grecque, des recueils biographiques (comme l'Histoire philosophique de Porphyre), des biographies philosophiques (comme la Vita Aristotelis de Ptolémée d'Alexandrie) et bibliographiques (comme Sur l'ordre de ses propres livres de Galien), le second ne s'est pas préoccupé de savoir qui étaient les auteurs arabes qui allaient devenir pour plusieurs siècles les autorités de l'Europe savante. Il a fallu attendre la Renaissance italienne pour que se développe en Europe une conscience intellectuelle qui conduise à la production de la monumentale Bibliotheca universalis (1545) de l'humaniste suisse Conrad Gessner. C'est dans ce nouveau contexte historique qu'est conçu à Rome, en 1527, le recueil biographique de Jean-Léon l'Africain. Son importance est telle qu'il va rester une référence quasi incontestée jusqu'au milieu du XIXe siècle. Pour se convaincre de l'importance de sa réception dans la culture européenne moderne, il suffit de savoir que l'Encyclopédie de Diderot et d'Alembert l'a littéralement pillé en lui empruntant plus de la moitié de ses biographies qui sont reprises telles quelles dans ses entrées.
