Rare, c…omplete and in good condition. The Panorama of Physiographic Types is an iconic educational masterpiece in the fields of geography and cartography. This unique publication was designed in 1926 by the influential American cartographer and geographer Armin K. Lobeck. The work served as a revolutionary teaching tool to show students the direct connection between tangible, three-dimensional landscapes and their abstract, two-dimensional representation on topographic maps. The document consists of two large map sheets (Chart A and Chart B) that were printed back-to-back or intended to be laid side-by-side. The maps depict a completely fictional landscape. Lobeck combined a detailed 3D perspective (a bird's-eye view of mountains, rivers, glaciers, and coastlines) with an exact, traditional 2D contour map of the very same area. To give the piece a playful yet educational character, he gave the fictional geographic features alphabetical names that referenced famous geologists and geographers. Although the Panorama of Physiographic Types was regularly reprinted by the Geographical Press from the 1920s into the 1950s, it has become an extremely rare and sought-after collector's item today. Because it was used intensively as fill-in worksheets and study material in classrooms and university laboratories, the vast majority of physical copies were worn out, written on, or discarded over the decades. Complete, undamaged copies of the original sheets or early reprints are hardly ever found on the private market. The few remaining pieces are carefully preserved in the heritage collections of major academic libraries, such as the Bodleian Library in Oxford. Armin Kohl Lobeck (1886-1958) was an absolute pioneer in geomorphology - the science that studies Earth's landforms. For years, he was a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and later at the prestigious Columbia University. Lobeck excelled at translating complex geological structures into clear, hand-drawn diagrams and block diagrams. His work was so accurate and respected that during both World Wars, the US government and military leadership enlisted him to draw crucial physiographic maps for peace conferences and military invasions. Besides this educational panorama, he became world-famous for his monumental books like Block Diagrams (1924) and large-scale physiographic maps of entire continents, including the famous Physiographic Diagram of the United States.
