Gilbert Hay (born c.1403, last mentioned in 1456) was a Scottish poet and translator, and perhaps a kinsman of the house of Errol. This third volume of 'The Prose Works of Sir Gilbert Hay' presents an edition of the second and third articles found in the Hay Manuscript, now National Library of Scotland, Acc. 9253. Article 2 is the 'Buke of the Ordre of Knychthede'; and Article 3 is the 'Buke of the Gouernaunce of Princis' (volume I of this edition treats Gilbert Hay, the Hay Manuscript, and matters of text and language in detail; volume II offers the text of the manuscripts first article, the 'Buke of the Law of Armys'). The introductory pages to the present volume offer a survey of Hay's sources for the texts edited here. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The book is in excellent condition and the contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The book comes in a clear plastic wrapper, as issued.

His only poetic work is 'The Buik of King Alexander the Conquerour', of which a portion, in copy, formerly at Taymouth Castle, now lies in the National Records of Scotland. Another copy, believed to be an earlier version, on which the Taymouth copy is based, can be found at the British Library. The present book is a more accessible version of both, with a detailed textual analysis of the differences.
