In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Good. None (illustrator). First edition. An anthology of scarce early edition poems by Theophilus Swift, Cuthbert Shaw and William Combe. Comprising two poems by Theophilus Swift: 'The Temple of Folly, in Four Cantos' (ESTC T49932) and 'Poetical Address to His Majesty' (ESTC N40261). 'The Temple of Folly' is the first edition and retains the half-title and engraved frontispiece. It is very scarce and only ten copies are held institutionally worldwide. 'Poetical Address' is also a first edition and retains the half-title.The third poem to this anthology is Cuthbert Shaw's 'Monody to the Memory of a Young Lady who Died in Child-Bed'. It is a third edition, of this work which is written about the death of Shaw's wife Ann Rivers during childbirth. It is Shaw's best known poem and brought him to the attention of George Lyttelton, a fellow widower who wrote a similar poem on the death of his own wife. The ODNB notes that this work was still avidly read in the early 19th century. ESTC reference no T41389 for this work, which is held in five locations institutionally in the U.K.The final two pamphlets are by William Combe and are 'The Diabo-Lady' and 'The Diaboliad'. ESTC reference numbers T31773 and T112377. Both of these volumes have been bound without the half-titles. 'The Diaboliad' is lacking the final text leaf and advertisement leaf.To 'The Diabo-Lady' a prior owner's inscriptions to the margins identify the character's real identities. These satires are what brought Combe his popularity. Although, 'The Diabo-Lady' is frequently attributed to a group of authors rather than Combe.A scarce collection of poems, which provide a picture of society in the eighteenth century. In a half calf binding. Externally, sound, with rubbing to the spine and extremities. Small loss to the head of spine. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Tidemark to the frontispiece of 'Temple of Folly' and to the title page of 'Monody' which is faded. Closed tear to the inner margin of 'The Diabo-Lady' not affecting the text. 'The Diabo-Lady' and 'The Diaboliad' contain contemporary annotations naming the characters' real identities. Occasional light spots to pages. Good. book.

In den WarenkorbDisbound. Zustand: Good. Not Stated (illustrator). A scarce copy of Cuthbert Shaw's poetry written after the death of his young wife in 1768. A scarce work. This work is a poem that Cuthbert Shaw wrote after the death of his young wife in 1768. The poem became very successful when it was published as it caught the tastes of the day. Shaw was an English poet and actor, who published his first poem, 'Liberty', in 1756. He also wrote 'The Four Farthing Candles', 'The Race', and 'An Elegy on the Death of Charles Yorke, the Lord Chancellor'. With an illustrated title page, one plate, and one engraved tailpiece. Disbound, missing the boards, with evidence of having been previously bound. Externally, a little marking to the front and rear wraps. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with only the odd spot, mostly to the illustrated title page and plate. Good. book.

In den Warenkorb4to, pp. [ii], ii, 16; a good copy; disbound. Second edition of this poem, the most successful work of Cuthbert Shaw (1738-71), poet and actor: the poem was written in memory of his young wife Ann Rivers. In this edition Shaw replaces the prose preface of the first edition (1768), which is full of apologies, with a more self-confident verse dedication to Lord Lyttelton, whose attention he had presumably attracted with the first edition. The second edition is just as rare as the first, with ESTC locating just three copies in Britain (Leeds, Oxford and Rylands) and four in the USA (Yale, Pennsylvania, UCLA and Cornell). There is also a copy at the British Library.
