Light blue cloth titling & decorations in red to front board, gold titling to spine; both volumes w…ith split internal hinges, amateur repairs [tape] have solidified binding but remain unsightly, all edges rubbed with cloth worn through, spine ends chipped, further spine damage & stains at base of vol 1, a good set only but serviceable. ALEXANDER TOLMER [1815-1890] arrived in Adelaide aboard the Branken Moor in 1840 & served in a variety of roles within the police force, including a brief stint as Commissioner. This memoir was written upon the urging of friends "shortly after the publication of Early Recollections & Experiences Of Colonial Life by Mr J.W. Bull" [from the Preface] Also includes his service in the Civil War of Portugal [1832-35] but the largest portion relates to South Australia.

Very good. The author, a police…officer in England, who in 1840 migrated to South Australia taking up the post of sub-inspector of Police under Governor George Gawler. In 1852 Tolmer succeeded George Dashwood as Commissioner of Police and as soon as the gold rush began, he proposed an overland gold escort service from Victoria to South Australia.

Light blue cloth printed in red and gold; top and leading edges uncut; cloth very slightly rubbed at the extremities and lightly flec…ked; spines very lightly sunned; inner hinges cracked at the endpapers, but firm; an excellent set (and notoriously difficult to find in such pleasing condition). Alexander Tolmer (1815-90) was Commissioner of Police in South Australia in 1852-53. He is best remembered for his 'overland gold escort service from Victoria to South Australia, designed to reverse the drain of currency from the colony during the gold rush'; however, his long absences on escort duty led in part to his being demoted from the job in November 1853. The 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' goes on to describe his autobiography as 'an engaging and egotistical work in two volumes mainly devoted to his [military] service in Portugal and with the police'. This set has the ink stamp of 'Harold Woodlands | May 19 1942' on the verso of each front free endpaper. [2 items].
