Inspired by the fighting spirit of the Marines who liberated Guam, he became one himself upon receiving his bachelor's degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1951. He earned an MA degree from George Wash ington University; was designated a Distinguished Graduate by the Naval War College; and, received an LLD from the University of Guam. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1980 as a Brigadier General; taught at the University of Guam; and served in the U. S. Congress for 4 terms as Guam's Representative. He was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus by Notre Dame in 1988 and, in 2004, was entered in Who's Who in Marine Corps History. His commitment to the preservation of the Chamorro lan guage and culture prompted him to write and produce a series of TV shows, Nihi Ta Hasso and Nihi Ta Bisita; to write a concise history of Guam, Bisita Guam: A Special Place in the Sun; and to maintain a cultural preservation website.
