He studied fine art at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg from 1972â"78 and moved to Perth in 1982. He lectured in various universities and art schools for over 20 years, while maintaining a regular exhibition schedule. In 2017 he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy from Curtin University.Alex Spremberg's work is inspired by everyday life. The ordinary objects that we handle on a daily basis often provide the raw materials for his work. From matchboxes, cardboard packaging to vinyl records and their covers, as well as newsprint, tea bags and shopping trolleys - these materials have been altered and incorporated into his practice. The processes he devises for these objects emphasise their materiality and make the passage of time tangible. He uses these items to investigate the idiosyncrasies of human perception within the context of a non-objective art practice.Alex Sprembergâs works reside in many prominent public and private collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of Western Australia, Art Gallery of South Australia, The University of Western Australia, Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, Murdoch University, Artbank; Bankwest, Wesfarmers, Woodside, the Janet Holmes à Court Collection, and Daimler Chrysler Contemporary, Berlin. She has published three monographs on her art practice, and a book:ÂThe Decorative in Twentieth Century Art: A Story of Decline and Resurgence, Gaunt P., (VDM Publishing, Germany) 2010.The main underpinning to Pamelaâs art practice stems from a longstanding interest in aesthetics, with a focus on: the ornamental in Art, Design; Architecture; materiality; and sensorial (affective) approaches to art. She is interested in exploring the spaces between Art, Design and Architecture and has peripheral interests in aspects of science, technology and sustainable/environmental issues. This can be exemplified in projects she has completed that explore new approaches to incorporating electro-chromic and solar responsiveness in artwork. Pamela also enjoys working with industry collaborators using existing materials and processes to achieve new approaches to materiality and form. French flaps|Softcover. Zustand: FINE! ÂAUSTRALIAN ART Exhibition CatalogueJunctions is an exhibition of photographic portraits created by Gerson Bettencourt Ferreira during his residency at IASKA. Bettencourtâs penetrating and empathetic images depict a broad cross-section of residents and visitors to the small town of Kellerberrin captured in everyday public and private settings. The subjects pose consciously and deliberately, having momentarily interrupted everyday activities to engage in a brief silent exchange with the photographer. The resulting images are dignified and compelling in their unadorned directness. Bettencourtâs work is in this sense quite antithetic to the tradition of âspontaneousâ photography that feeds on images of people caught unaware by an intrusive photographic eye seeking the quirky, the shocking or the picturesqueAbout the artist:This exhibition follows previous projects that Bettencourt developed in the USA, Africa, France, Portugal and Germany. Throughout his work to date, the artistâs approach has been to identify a specific site and systematically engage with the diverse people who inhabit it. Sites of previous projects included an African town, a suburb of San Francisco, a popular beach in Portugal and amateur sporting clubs in Berlin. Each body of images is presented to the public in two formats: as an exhibition and as photographic book. The layout of the works is an important component in Bettencourtâs exhibitions, as photographs are printed in different sizes and arranged in varying clusters and patterns. But what underpins both books and exhibitions is an attempt to create images that capture the universal humanity and individual distinctiveness of the people engaged in the silent dialogue that takes place across the threshold of the photographic lens.pp. 92 illusts #190823 First Edition Elizabeth's Bookshops have been one of Australia's premier independent book dealers since 1973.
