In den Warenkorbhardcover. Zustand: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Zustand: FINE. First printing, a trade paperback, not issued in hardcover. A jazz musician whom Nancy Cunard met in Paris, Crowder was the dedicatee of (and inspiration for) Cunard's massive anthology 'Negro.' This is his frank perspective on their relationship, on the times, and on the production of the book 'Negro.' Fascinating reading - and one of the hardest to find titles produced by Alice Walker's and Robert Allen's small press. Very uncommon and interesting. Photo of Crowder and Cunard at the Hours Trees Press on front cover - 201 pp. cover price 9.95. Just about fine in illustrated wrappers.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author incorporating the printed limitation, "[This is No.] is for Dr. Armando Child, Henry Crowder. First copy in token of first audition in his home. London, Dec. 8. 1930". This edition was limited to only 100 copies numbered and signed by Crowder. It is accompanied by a two-page autograph letter signed by Harold Acton - one of the contributors - to the bookseller John Bell, explaining the association. Child was "a genial and sociable doctor" whose patients included Radclyffe Hall, Edith Sitwell and her brother Osbert, the journalist and criminologist F. Tennyson Jesse, and the actress Vivien Leigh. Acton notes that "most of his friends were also patients, including Nancy Cunard". "I remember him as a kindly, humorous man who had some connection with Alexander Dumas? evidently Crowder played his music at one of Dr Child's parties, but I was not among his guests". The Hours Press was Nancy Cunard's small but important venture. In 1930 she moved the press to Paris, and that summer she and Crowder travelled to Creysse in the south of France. She had persuaded him to set his choice of poems to music for this book. Acton, Richard Aldington, and Walter Lowenfels were happy for Crowder to choose from their poems. Samuel Beckett - whose first book, Whoroscope, Crowder had helped print at the Hours Press that same year - wrote "From the Only Poet to a Shining Whore (for Harry Crowder to Sing") specifically for this publication. Folio. Original boards, photomontage design to covers by Man Ray. Housed in a custom black cloth slipcase and quarter morocco box, mistakenly labelled "Inscribed by Nancy Cunard". Covers toned, rear slightly soiled, extremities rubbed, head of spine bumped, minor silverfishing to lower edges of first three leaves, gauze showing at gutters of a few cracked gatherings: a very good copy.
