Pages are bright and clear with light foxing and tanning to text block edges. Pen inscription to front free endpaper. Light cracking to gutters but binding remains firm. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear. Spine has light sunning with soft crushing to ends. Book has a slight forward lean. Unclipped dust jacket with minor rubbing, chipping and tearing to edges. Moderate tanning and scuffing overall.

Dent, London, 1938, first edition; 160 x 210mm; pp 174; decorated board covers, surface and edges a little rubbed; ownership signature on the front fly; pictorial end papers; black and white and coloured drawings in the text, some full page and others chapter vignettes; good or better condition. . . . This was Demuth's first book. It's the story of Trudi and Hansel with the cow Lotti, Berni the dog, Griselda the hen and Kraak the raven who all go up the mountain and meet the giant Riese before returning to the village. Supported by the gay and cheerful illustrations the book was very well received and set Demuth on her writing career.

Illustrated by Nora Lavrin 1st UK edition. Firm copy in tight binding. Cloth covers rubbed and scratched; a toe-rag named 'Tim' has scratched his name 6 times onto the front cover in accordance with the tiled pattern. The publisher's own retained copy with their inked 'file' stamp on the front endpaper and front panel of jacket. Copiously illustrated in colour and black and white throughout. Very good in slightly used, near very good dust jacket, with slight tanning at spine and some nicking at spine head.

FIRST EDITION. 8vo., pale blue clothbound hardback, with dark blue illustration to upper cover, in colour pictorial dust jacket; 270pp, with b/w illustrations throughout and duotone map endpapers. Ink owner name to ffep, slight browning to edges, boards a little darkened and worn at edges, several tiny holes to spine. Priceclipped dust jacket is also rather darkened and a little soiled, some wear to edges with a few closed tears, corner chips and loss to spine ends and top of rear cover.
