CHAPTER 1
Pretty good.
Four years, nine months. Not a long time. Time enough, however, to get to know someone. Time enough to get to know a son. Time enough to get to know yourself. Your true self. Vincent Taylor; V for short, was feeling generous this morning, so he went to the kitchen of his newly built home and fixed breakfast. Since he and Terri had been travelling the world, V felt it was high time for them to settle down ... especially since they had a child together. It didn't seem right to raise him without any stability or a true house for a home. V made sure that he didn't pattern his new home after his brother's ten thousand square foot home. That was just too big for V, so he built a four-bedroom, three-bathroom home with a treated wood deck on the back. The front would have a combination of redwood and gray brick. He allowed Terri to put her design thumbprint on the interior and also allowed for her to have the size of a kitchen she desired. He didn't put in a swimming pool, though. If they wanted to go swimming, they could just visit Jr. and Pat year-round, since their pool was inside and heated.
Terri and his son were still sleep, so this was the best time for V to make a move. Even though years had passed, this lifestyle was still new to him. He was rich beyond his wildest dreams ... in more ways than just money. He was able to officially fix it where Terri was no longer married to his brother Victor, and now V and she could legally be together. Since they could be, he did the honorable thing ... he married Terri. He was the new owner of a security system company; one he funded and started himself. He had a bouncing baby boy ... well, he was already past the terrible two stages, so he wasn't bouncing anymore ... unless one wanted to say that he was bouncing all over the place. V built himself his new home, ten miles from "his" previous home ... well, his brother's previous home. He was close to his best friend, Jr., who now owned the previously mentioned house and now V could see Moms when he wanted, since she stayed in the same house as always. Anything would have been better than being in jail, but this? He hadn't anticipated this. This was Heaven on Earth! He loved his family and he could feel the love from them ... especially Terri. Thanks to his brother's underhanded dealings, V was very wealthy, and even though the dealings were suspect, the outcomes became absolutely legal and V faced no harm or any repercussions for wrongdoings. Things were going pretty good for V right now. He couldn't help but think about his good fortunes constantly, but he was interrupted in his reflections by a kind, sleepy but familiar voice.
"Morning, baby." Terri entered the kitchen, rubbing her eyes, just as V was scrambling the eggs.
"Hey, Sugar! How'd you sleep?" V asked.
"Like a princess. Or a queen. Anyone with royalty status."
"Oh? And why would that be?"
"Because, I'm married to the Prince of my heart; the King of my castle; the man of my dreams!" she said.
"Oh, so I'm the shit, huh?!"
"Yes, you are so full of shit, V," Terri said playfully.
"That's not what I said, and you know it."
"Yeah, I know," she replied.
V just smiled. He had never been in a relationship like this one and even though he thought he loved Cassie, he had never loved like this before. He also didn't think he'd really be married ... even if he was going to ask Cassie when he got out of prison. And to think, he was now married to his brother Victor's former wife! This might seem strange to some, but V had experienced much stranger things in his life. He placed a plate of a full-size breakfast in front of her.
"Say, Terri, can we talk?"
"Sure, Sugar. Anytime."
"We've sure had ourselves an adventure, haven't we? You know, the travel; the gifts; the lavish life, so to speak?"
"I've enjoyed myself. You're quite the gentleman, V. Who knew that about you?"
"Well, I knew it about myself, but that's beside the point. What I was saying, was that you realize we have a whole lot of money and I really don't have to work another day in my life, if I chose not to, right?"
"Yeah, I know that. But I also know that you're not lazy and a little bit smarter than people gave you credit for. You can't sit on your ass all year and when tax time comes, you got nothing to show the IRS as an income. That's smart to start your own business, V. If it builds, then when you spend money, it won't look suspicious and the IRS will have something tangible to try to take all your money from."
"Ha, ha, that's funny. You're right, baby. I can't live in a house like this, drive cars like I drive and wear the finest clothes without showing a source. COC is doing good, too!"
"I know. I've seen the books, remember?"
"Yeah, that's right. I might need you to fill in for me this coming week. Moms might need me to help her with a catering job. You down?"
"For you? Hell, yeah! As much as you've done for me and Vas ... shit, I'd be crazy not to help you out sometimes."
"You're already crazy."
"Why do you say that?"
"Because you married me."
"Well, if that's the case, then I'm crazy in love with you."
V paused.
"Terri? So, you're glad you're with me, huh?"
"I am."
"You do realize that I am not the man you met in law school, right?" V asked.
"I know that. I just wish you would stop bringing it up. I'm with who I wanted to be with all the time ... or who I needed to be with. At least I'm with who I thought I was getting with in the first place. That bastard!"
"Okay, okay. Sorry for making you think about him. I'll try not to do it anymore. But since we are on the subject, and before we put this behind us, can I ask you another question?"
Terri looked up from the plate that V placed in front of her.
"What? About Victor?"
"Well ......
