First appearance in the U.S. of the French West Indian political philosopher's third book and most enduring work. "Fanon demonstrates how violence in the colonized countries in the Cold War World reflects the violent relations that develop between capitalism and socialism, and shows how violence affords a colonial people its first sense of community. This, his most famous manifest, was written against the background of his Algerian and African experience. He stated that 'he wrote not for Europe but for the Third World'" (BLOCKSON 92, pp.66-67). A deeply significant post-colonial text, equal in influence to Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung and The Autobiography of Malcolm X among radicals and Third World militants. Constance Farrington's English language translation was not published by Grove Press until 1963, during the rising tide of civil disobedience, oppressive Jim Crow laws, and increasing violence sweeping the United States. Bobby Seale would share his copy of The Wretched of the Earth with fellow Black Panther party co-founder Huey Newton, who was so moved by Fanon's words that he read the book six times. After the formation of the Party, every Panther was told it was his/her duty to read The Wretched of the Earth, thereby entrenching Fanon's revolutionary insights into the BPP's ideology and political thought.
