Beschreibung:

With the advent of space travel, we have begun to explore the worlds beyond Earth. Dedicated planetary scientists have spent their careers studying and exploring these worlds by telescope and through space missions. In this book, ten of these scientists have been brought together to describe their favorite worlds, what they have discovered, and what drives them to explore. Each tells a personal story. Together, the ten essays in this book range across the breadth of the Solar System - from hellish Mercury to the snows of Pluto. The stories these pioneers tell range from telescopic to robotic exploration, from personal adventures in the Antarctic to painting planetary landscapes, from the joys of success to the frustrations of failure. Worlds Beyond is the third in an extraordinary series of books in which Alan Stern has brought together leading space scientists to describe their work. The first of these volumes, Our Worlds, was truly a first of its kind in revealing the inner motivations of planetary scientists. Next, in Our Universe, leading astronomers and cosmologists explored the vastness of the Universe itself. Now, with Worlds Beyond, we return to our home - the Solar System - to visit fascinating new worlds and to explore them through the eyes of a second group of legendary planetary scientists Contents Preface Welcome home 1. Now, with Worlds Beyond, we return to our home--the solar system--to visit those fascinating new worlds beyond our own. S. Alan Stern is Director of the Department of Space Studies at Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado. He is a planetary scientist and astrophysicist with observational and theoretical interests. Stern is an avid pilot and a principal investigator in NASA's planetary research program, and he was selected to be a NASA space shuttle mission specialist finalist. He is the author of more than one hundred papers and popular articles. He is also the author of Pluto & Charon (Wiley, 1997).

Book Description: Worlds Beyond is a fascinating collection of essays by leading planetary scientists, which explore the planets that captivate them. In it we travel from Mercury in the innermost regions of the solar system, to Pluto at its outer extreme, from Antarctic to telescopic and robotic exploration, and from research to painting and reporting planetary science. This accessible, wonderfully illustrated book also reveals what drives these talented scientists, and how their careers and very lives have been shaped by a burning desire to understand some of the worlds beyond our own.
