2 Vols. Folio (37 x 27 cm). Contemporary half navy blue morocco over pebbled cloth boards, sides with gilt rules, spines with gilt-ruled raised bands and gilt lettering, marbled endpapers and edges. In total 46 full-page steel-engraved plates comprising 2 frontispieces, 2 engraved titles with vignettes, and 42 full page illustrations. Some light shelfwear and scuffing to bindings, contents remarkably clean and fresh with only some light marginal spotting to prelims in Vol.1 and a small marginal dampstain to prelims in Vol.2, generally a very good handsomely bound copy of this edition of Shakespeare. The Imperial Shakespeare was an ambitious project, incorporating illustrations by a variety of artists and extensive notes, comments and essays, including a detailed biography by Charles Knight (1791 1873). Shakespeare was one of Knight's specialities; in 1842 he wrote and published a biography of Shakespeare, and in the same year produced The Pictorial Shakspere, which appeared in 8 parts (1838 1841). His editions of Shakespeare were extremely influential, playing "an important part in how the Victorian population thought about and constructed Shakespeare" (Goodman).
