This is the story of three Byzantine empresses who between 780 and 856 restored the veneration of icons, thus saving the Byzantine Empire from a purely symbolic and abstract decorative art, and ensuring its influence for centuries to come. Judith Herrin is Professor of Late Antique and Byzantine Studies at King's College, University of London. Between 1991 and 1995 she was Professor of Byzantine History at Princeton University. She is a leading scholar of the medieval period.
