In the rain-dark streets of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, women knew danger by its small signs: a familiar truck slowing near the curb, a man too eager to offer money or drugs, a silence settling over names that had once been spoken every day.

Then one woman escaped.

Known in inquiry records as Ms. Anderson, she survived a 1997 attack at Robert Pickton's Port Coquitlam farm and left behind evidence that should have changed everything. Instead, the charges were stayed. The women kept disappearing. Families begged to be believed. Community advocates carried names into rooms where officials kept insisting the pattern was not yet proof.

The Women the City Would Not See tells the story of the Pickton murders through the survivor's narrow escape, the lives of the women targeted from the Downtown Eastside, and the institutions that learned too slowly because poverty, addiction, sex work, and Indigenous identity had already taught them whom not to value. This is not a story about a killer's legend. It is a story about women who read the danger first, and a city that made disbelief feel official.

At the heart of the book is one devastating question: how many women had to vanish before power would believe the people who had been warning it all along?

Written with victim-centered empathy, coastal dread, and a clear eye for systemic failure, this true crime account follows the trail from the 1997 escape to the farm search, the trial, the stayed charges, the inquiry, and the legacy that still moves through families and communities across British Columbia.
