Cloth, 4to, 29 cm, ix, 164 pp, frontispiece and 36 plates (1 in colour). From the blurb: "This is the first full-length examination ever undertaken of William Henry Bartlett - the man and his work. It is in two parts. The first is a twentieth-century view in which Professor Ross describes Bartlett's art in relation to some of the aesthetic and literary ideas current in the nineteenth Century. The author has searched every possible source for information on Bartlett's life, his apprenticeship, marriage and family life, his extensive travels (Europe, Middle East, North America), his relations with his publishers and engravers, and his work as a journal editor and author. He has placed Bartlett in the context of Victorian 'sensibility',where theories of the 'pictur- esque and sublime' dominated art, where travellers and the salon alike eagerly sought elegantly iliustrated books of far-off lands. The book is beautifully illustrated with a selected cross-section of Bartlett's entire work. The second part of the book - a nine-teenth-century view - contains the only extensive work ever written about Bartlett. It is the very rare Brief Memoir by Dr William Beattie, published by subscription in London in 1855. Aill subsequent bio-graphical notices about Bartlett rest on this book and it remains the principal source of much that we know about the artist. The bibliography of books written by or containing illustrations by W. H. Bartlett should prove useful to scholars and collectors. It indicates how exten-sively Bartlett's sketches were used through-out his lifetime, and how much Victorians valued the picturesque, topographical art of their time. " Very Good in price-clipped and chipped dustwrapper which is heavily stained on the rear panel. Buchnummer des Verkäufers ABE-36226
