Cloth, 4to, 29 cm, 192 pp, 116 facs (some colour) From the blurb: "The art of William Blake (1757-1837) has never attracted as much interest as it does today. Yet, despite the voluminous literature on Blake as both poet and artist, there has so far been no readily available introduction to his work published in a large format with a sufficient number of plates to indicate the rich variety of his production in different modes and in various media. This book sets out to remedy that lack. The author traces Blake's artistic development, beginning with his apprenticeship to an engraver at the age of ten. During the early part of his career Blake experimented with a number of techniques until he found a form of expression uniquely his own - the Illuminated book, in which the handwritten text of his own poems and his designs for them were engraved together to form a single decorative unit. In his analysis of the Illuminated books, the author shows how text and designs are related to each other in often complex and subtle ways. At the same time Blake continued his other activities of engraving, drawing and painting, Among the commissions he carried out for various patrons were illustrations to the works of other poets - Milton, Young, Gray and Dante - and an important series of paintings on biblical subjects, He also experimented with colour printing, achieving some astonishingly rich results. The introduction is followed by a large number of beautiful plates, many full-page, and many the same size as the originals, the book also contains a useful chronological table of Blake's life and works."
