Nathuram Godse assassinated Mahatma Gandhi as he walked towards the prayer grounds at the Birla House in New Delhi. Godse had attempted the attack twice earlier, but failed. After the third attempt, which led to Gandhi’s death, he was arrested at the crime scene and sentenced to death after a year-long trial.

Born in the Pune district of British India, Nathuram Godse (19 May 1910 - 15 November 1949) was an Indian nationalist and activist. A former member of the Hindu Mahasabha and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), he was associated with the latter as a ground worker. After his assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, he was given the death sentence in 1949.
