The Whitney family name reaches back more than 800 years — to Sir Randolph de Whitney, who rode with Richard the Lionheart on the Crusades in the 12th century, and to the ancient family seat at Whitney-on-the-Wye in Herefordshire, England.

This genealogy traces twelve generations of the Whitney family — from Whitney-on-the-Wye, England, to Pepperell, Massachusetts, to Tunbridge, Vermont — covering the years 1553 through 1977.

Originally researched and compiled by Fred Farnham Whitney, and first published in 1977, this Third Edition has been digitally restored and republished in 2026 by his grandson, Tim Whitney, so that the family's story may endure for generations to come.
