This book, which acts as a companion to the video of White Man Sleeps, provides insight into that seminal dance work, offering a number of different angles on the piece. Opening with an interview with the choreographer herself, the book places White Man Sleeps in the context of her artistic career, and provides a detailed account of the choreography itself. The subsequent sections deal with the collaboration process, and include recollections by one of the original dancers, as well as insights into the music, set, lighting, costume and filming, and finally a section on interpreting the dance.
White Man Sleeps was revived in 1997 in significantly altered form, and the book also compares the two versions, thereby highlighting the developments in Davies's artistic style since 1988.
White Man Sleeps is currently on the A-level dance syllabus, and the book will be an invaluable resource for both students and teachers. Extensively cross-referenced, it also contains many suggestions for educational use, with both written and practical exercises as well as Labanotation examples and student tasks.
