Anita Aldon is not a typical genteel young woman circa 1887. She loves to garden and roam (corsetless no less) the 80 acres that remain of her family's formerly large ranch in Las Tunas, California, but her widowed mother, Dona Guadalupe Aldon, is intent on selling their land and moving to Los Angeles, where she hopes Anita will find a suitable husband. Meanwhile, John Claremont Vanderburg, the youngest son of one of America's richest men, has decided to take an unconventional role himself by going into farming. Visiting Las Tunas on a whim because of its beautiful mountain backdrop, he encounters a lovely girl whistling a tune while dangling her feet in a stream. A series of misunderstandings ensue. Anita thinks he's a consumption victim in Las Tunas for his health; John thinks she's engaged to her uncle's business partner.
