“Rage, Tonka, come on!” JJ called, and the hounds responded with enthusiasm, their paws splashing through puddles as they raced ahead. Rage, the black brindle, took the lead, his keen senses guiding them through the rugged terrain of the valley. Tonka, the brown and gold brindle, followed closely, his strong frame cutting through the rain with purpose.
“Let’s follow the river,” Jared suggested, pointing toward the sound of rushing water that mingled with the storm. “It should lead us in the right direction.”
The boys navigated through the thick underbrush following closely behind their Dad, their boots squelching in the mud as they made their way toward the riverbank. The map indicated a grove not far from the water, a place where the trees formed a natural shelter. JJ could feel the energy of the valley around him, the stories of the past whispering through the wind and rain.
“Look at the map again,” Kass urged, pulling his backpack closer to his chest as they reached the river. “We need to find the landmarks.”
JJ squinted at the parchment, tracing the lines with his finger. “There’s a bend in the river here, and then it looks like we head straight toward the grove. We should be close!”
With the hounds leading the way, they pressed on, the rain soaking through their clothes but failing to dampen their spirits. The trees loomed overhead, their branches swaying in the wind, creating a canopy that shielded them from the worst of the downpour. JJ felt a thrill run through him; they were on the brink of uncovering something truly special.
