On a journey to Tuscany, widowed Lilia Herriton falls in love with both Italy and a handsome Italian much younger than herself, and decides to stay. Furious, her dead husband's family send Lilia's brother-in-law to Italy to prevent this marriage, but will he arrive in time?
In the meantime, all hell breaks loose as there's a baby and a death in childbirth and Lilia's in-laws are desperate to avoid a scandal, even if they have to travel to Italy themselves, as well as considering it their right and their duty to try to obtain custody of the infant so that he can be raised as an Englishman.
