Water utilities must be active and vigilant to reduce the likelihood of waterborne disease outbreaks. AWWA Manual M48, Waterborne Pathogens, the latest in the AWWA Manuals of Water Supply Operations series, gives you all the basic technical information you need to improve microbial water quality in the drinking water you deliver to your customers. This manual provides, in a clearly written style, the most current information on: Microbial monitoring, sampling and testing Treatment and disinfection practices for all types of pathogens Treatment process optimization Distribution system water quality Cross-connection control, dead-end flushing, hydrant flushing Watershed management and source water protection Waterborne disease outbreaks, their causes, problems, statistics and challenges to treatment barriers. You will find all the information you need to improve the microbial quality of your water, organized in logical fashion. This book will tell you how to assess the current levels of microbiological contaminants in source waters how to organize a program of protection, education and improvements to contain these contaminants how to optimize your treatment plant performance and how to maintain water quality while it is in the distribution system. You will get facts and findings on 43 waterborne viral, bacterial and parasitic pathogens. Waterborne Pathogens covers all major waterborne pathogenic organisms and many less known ones, as well. Each pathogen is given its own chapter that includes: description of the organism description of the disease reservoirs for the agent mode of transmission methods of detection occurrence in people, animals and the environment survival of the agent in the environment documented waterborne outbreaks effectiveness of water treatment processes guidelines and monitoring regulations additional information sources. Contents Include: Section I - Introduction to Water Quality: Waterborne Disease Outbreaks: Their Causes, Problems and Challenges to Treatment Barriers Water Quality in Source Water, Treatment and Distribution Systems Water Quality Monitoring, Sampling and Testing.
