Inhaltsangabe: Lindy Jones loves a drink. A drink and a chat and teaching. So when people start noticing that Lindy is slurring her words, they wonder if she's been dipping into the Pinot Grigio a little bit earlier than usual. The GP thinks she may have had a minor stroke - or a trapped nerve. Nothing to fret about. Just one of those things. But when the consultant at the hospital diagnoses Motor Neurone Disease - suddenly things are very different. 'The Voice in my Head is Perfect' is the powerful memoir of Lindy Jones, a fifty-something English teacher from London whose disease steadily steals the most important parts of her life; her job as a teacher, her future with her husband and children and, for someone who loved to talk, her voice. This is not a misery memoir nor a sob-fest. In turns it is emotional and horrifying; funny and wise. Lindy explores her childhood with an emotional mother and psychiatrist father, her career as a teacher in tough London schools and her adoption of Scrappy, a mutt from Battersea with his own issues who becomes her saviour of sorts. 'The Voice in my Head is Perfect' is an important and moving account, told with fierce honesty and dark humour, of a woman's battle to come to terms with an appalling illness.
About the Author: Lindy Jones, formerly Lucas, was born in London and grew up in North Finchley. She studied at Brighton Teacher Training College and then Sussex University for her B. Ed, returning to London in 1978 to begin her teaching career in North West London. Marriage to Gareth Jones and two sons meant a few years working part-time and at this point in her life she began writing fiction. As well as being an avid diarist she had also written stories as a child and this interest in creative writing began to emerge more seriously in her thirties. She became a member of a writing group and finished her first (unpublished) teenage novel. Back at work full-time her career took off and in her forties she became Head of English. More unpublished books followed but she continued to write and teach until, in 2010, she was diagnosed with motor neurone disease, a rare, degenerative, terminal illness which meant that she had to give up work. This devastating diagnosis was a terrible blow to someone who had been so healthy and energetic. Struggling to cope with the gradual loss of her voice she began to write about her experiences, joining a Memoir Writing Class which eventually resulted in her book, The Voice in My Head is Perfect. As of autumn 2012 Lindy battles with gradually weakening muscles but she is still writing.
