Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
Linda R. Berg is an award-winning teacher and textbook author. She received a B.Sc. in science education, M.Sc. in botany, and Ph.D. in plant physiology from the University of Maryland. Dr. Berg taught at the University of Maryland-College Park for 17 years and at St. Petersburg College in Florida for 10 years. She has taught introductory courses in environmental science, biology, and botany to thousands of students and has received numerous teaching and service awards. Dr. Berg is also the recipient of many national and regional awards, including the National Science Teachers Association Award for Innovations in College Science Teaching, the Nation's Capital Area Disabled Student Services Award, and the Washington Academy of Sciences Award in University Science Teaching. During her career as a professional science writer, Dr. Berg has authored or co-authored several leading college science textbooks. Her writing reflects her teaching style and love of science.
Mary Catherine Hager is a professional science writer and editor specializing in educational materials for life and earth sciences. She received a double-major B.A. in environmental science and biology from the University of Virginia and an M.Sc. in zoology from the University of Georgia. Ms. Hager worked as an editor for an environmental consulting firm and as a senior editor for a scientific reference publisher. For the past 15 years, Ms. Hager has published articles in environmental trade magazines, edited federal and state reports addressing wetlands conservation issues, and written components of environmental science and biology textbooks for target audiences ranging from middle school to college. Her writing and editing pursuits are a natural outcome of her scientific training and curiosity coupled with her love of reading and communicating effectively.
Leslie G. Goodman was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, and completed a B.Sc. in zoology from the University of Calgary. She then moved to Winnipeg and completed an M.Sc. in aquatic ecology. The topic of her graduate thesis was "Phytoplankton Activity in the Red and Assiniboine Rivers as They Flow through the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba." With the creation of the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources at the University of Manitoba, Ms. Goodman became the instructor for the Introductory Environment course. In addition, she manages a cooperative education option that works closely with students to assist in identifying career goals and employment opportunities. In total, she works with approximately 700 students annually through the Introductory Environment course and another 50 students through the cooperative education option. She has been awarded the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources Award as Outstanding Instructor for first-year students, and has been nominated on several occasions for the University of Manitoba Outstanding Instructor for University 1 students.
Dr. Richard Baydack is a professor in the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources at the University of Manitoba. He received a B.Sc. in zoology and a Master of Natural Resources Management from the University of Manitoba, and a Ph.D. in wildlife biology from Colorado State University. Dr. Baydack's research focus is on developing practical applications of ecosystem management for large-scale landscapes to conserve biodiversity. Recent emphasis has centred on habitat manipulation techniques to increase reproductive success of various species and determination of the effects of human activities on species survival, especially in agricultural and forested ecosystems. Several of these recent initiatives have been developed outside of North America.
