This riveting historical novel unveils the clandestine romance between Empress Elisabeth, affectionately known as Sisi, and her enigmatic language tutor, Jakob Goldenthal. Their passionate affair, shrouded in secrecy, spirals into a tale of murder, corruption, and assassination that will leave readers breathless as they piece together the historical evidence of how such an unimaginable pairing of two people from polar opposite worlds could actually come together in one of the most passionate and sensual relationships that ever existed. The tragic consequences of their affair, culminating in the most shocking trail of murder that ultimately doomed the Empire and its royal family.

In the glittering halls of the Schonbrunn and Hofburg Palaces, Empress Elisabeth of Austria, a woman renowned for her beauty and melancholy, finds herself trapped in a gilded cage. Married to Emperor Franz Joseph I, Sisi’s life is a series of public duties and private sorrows. Her only solace comes from her language lessons with a charming and handsome professor from the University of Vienna. It was a forbidden love, fraught with danger and deceit, unfolding against the backdrop of a crumbling empire. Read how a domineering mother-in-law’s disapproval of Sisi’s independent spirit practically forces her into the arms of another man. The lovers navigate a labyrinth of court intrigue, where every whisper could lead to their undoing. Their passion, however, sets off a chain of events that culminates in a series of shocking murders, exposing the dark underbelly of the Habsburg monarchy.

Finding those responsible for the deaths becomes the driving force of Countess Irma Sztáray, Sisi’s loyal lady-in-waiting, who through her efforts to find those responsible for the assassination of her beloved empress becomes in turn an unwitting accomplice in the unfolding drama. Her loyalty to the Empress is tested as secrets unravel and with the aid of Swiss barrister Charles Soldan she uncovers the corrupt machinations of the Habsburg court, where the pursuit of power leads to betrayal, murder, and ultimately, the downfall of all those involved.

Set against the backdrop of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the late 19th century, “Vienna’s Last Waltz” meticulously weaves historical events and figures into its narrative. The novel captures the grandeur and decay of an empire on the brink of collapse, providing readers with a vivid portrayal of the period and the people that were involved in history’s greatest cover-up.

Drawn from historical records and personal stories of the Kahana and Goldenthal families, the narrative created is both historically accurate and emotionally resonant. Sisi’s story is one of resilience and defiance, and I hope readers will be captivated by her journey through the last chapter of the “Kahana Chronicles”.
