Mass market paperback. Zustand: Fair. Later printing. 215, [9] pages. Cover and some pages soiled and stained. Spine worn with small tears. Bookseller's stamp inside the front cover. This volume contains two of the war's most famous photographs: the Marines raising the American flag on Iwo Jima and the atomic mushroom cloud. It also includes a dramatic series of photographs of the way it was on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day; a memorable picture of three 14-year-old members of Hitler's "Air Guard"; a shocking photograph of the hell that was Belsen, and the photograph which may be the last ever taken of Hitler. This covers From D-Day in Europe to the Unconditional Surrender of Japan. Mr. Rothberg received a master's degree in creative writing from the University of Iowa in 1947 and a Ph.D. in English literature from Columbia in 1952. For the next seven years he was the editor of Free Europe Press, a division of Radio Free Europe. He was later a European correspondent for The National Observer and went on to teach at Hofstra, Columbia and St. John Fisher College in Rochester. This fourth and final volume of Eyewitness History of World War II covers the last stages of the War in both the European and Pacific theaters. It opens with the Allied landing on the beaches of Normandy, continues with the Battle of France, through the Red Army offensive of 1944, the Yalta conference and the capitulation of the Third Reich. The volume concludes with the savage and bitter Pacific island campaigns, MacArthur's eagerly-awaited return to the Philippines, the dropping of the atomic bomb, and the unconditional surrender of Japan. The four volume set includes 500 photographs and 100.000 words. This set, and each individual volume, re-creates with urgency and immediacy every aspects of the most complex, tragic, and heroic era mankind had endured. Artikel-Nr. 82127
