Freshfield served on the Society of Antiquaries of London Council, and as Vice President and Treasurer for many years. He presented many papers at Society meetings and donated a number of items to the Library including the printed copy of MagnaCarta (printed by Robert Redman of Fleet Street in 1539). His antiquarian interests were mainly the City of London and the Near East. He was a solicitor (Bank of England and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer), librarian, soldier, and more. In the year 1861, he was appointed as a solicitor to the Bank of England, a doctor of laws (University of Cambridge ), Treasurer of the Society of Antiquaries, President of the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society, Fellow of Winchester College, Librarian and Receiver General of the The Order of St John, citizen of London, a member of the Clothworkers Company, church warden of the St Margaret (Lothbury), and honourary of Associate of the Institute of British Architects.
